Visit to Sandhill Farm House in Rogate followed by Supper at 'The Three Horseshoes'
THURSDAY 26 SEPTEMBER
It had rained all week and it wasn't looking good for our proposed visit to this wonderful teaching garden and a contingency plan had been put in place in case the heavens opened. However, this was not needed as the clouds cleared and a watery sunshine came out just in time for the tour of the garden. The garden is owned and maintained by the world renowned lecturer and garden designer, Mrs Rosemary Alexander.
Walking through the inside gate we came to the green and white garden from where we walked along what is termed, 'the motorway'. This is very dry and sun-baked gravel path which is flanked by clipped box balls giving structure all year round. We all admired a rose called Crimson Bengal, which flowers repeatedly for 11 months of the year.
The garden was designed so there was always a surprise around the corner and there was even a small kitchen garden with a circular summer house, raised beds and a yew hedge grown in a hurdle raised space.
The evening sun lit up the various grasses which formed a gently swaying curtain. These grasses are split every three years or so. The view from the top of the steps leading into the house was simply stunning as the view across the bed of grasses was over fields to the downs in the background.
We finished the tour with some wine and delicious refreshments before driving off for supper at 'The Three Horseshoes' at Elsted where we enjoyed a lovely meal washed down with a good glass of wine - or two!!
